More Open Source talk in Informationweek and a new Ubuntu Server at work

June 27, 2007

Just got my June 25th edition of information week, and they have a fantastic article, on installing Linux on a USB drive to help out when that pesky Windows OS you have installed crashes.

Slowly but surely I’m turning my company into an Ubuntu shop, just added a new Ubuntu server to the mix. We now have 3 Ubuntu Servers and 10 Ubuntu Workstations….We got a long way to go but I’m working on it.

Linux and Open Source in the IT Industry

June 24, 2007

I get two Information Technology weekly trade magazines, COMPUTERWORLD and InformationWeek. Lately I’ve been noticing more and more articles and news items on Linux and Open Source. For the week of June 18th for example in COMPUTERWORLD it listed 3 news items on Linux and in InofrmationWeek they had two main articles on Linux development. It’s good to see, a year ago you might see Linux mentioned every once and a while but I see it every week now, last week COMPUTERWORLD even had an interview with Mark Shuttleworth. Like I said good to see.

Microsoft Rips off Researchers at Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona

June 22, 2007

Microsoft Rips off Researchers at Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, just my opinion but it sure looks that way on the “Surface”

Recently while on vacation I was flipping channels and came across a channel called “current TV”, what caught my eye was a  computer  booting to Kubuntu. This computer looked remarkably like Microsoft’s new Surface touch table. Funny thing is the reactable has been around over three years and research has been going on much longer than that. Bjork even uses it in her concerts. Here are some details on how it works, sure sounds like the surface to me!

For the tracking, the objects need to be properly illuminated, so the camera and thus the computer vision application can see them correctly. For the projection onto a table, the surface needs to be dark though, so the user can see the projected image well enough. Since these two necessary steps logically exclude each other, the solution is to operate in two different spectra:

And yes it’s a touch screen just like the surface, it was created as a kind of instrument but could easily be modified as a computer display an data entry device.

Current TV does not have a link to the video I saw “which showed the construction” , but on reactable’s web site there is enough info to get me more than a little curious as to just exactly how Microsoft came upon their so called Surface technology. Visit reactable and judge for yourself.

Just to note the reactable can use software from Ubuntu to Windows and a simulator is avalable from their website.

This is a big deal!

June 16, 2007

So I work for the State of New Mexico sure we spend the tax payers money just not on my salary. That being said I get all the free trade magazines I can get my hands on. One of those is COMPUTERWORD, well in the same issue “June 11th 2007 Vol 41, NO 24″ that proclaimed on the font page that Microsoft was able to lobby in four states and have the open doc format legislation fail…trust me this will be the subject of many a future post by me, but I digress. On page 16 of that same issue is a great interview with Mark Shuttleworth, this is good news for us Ubuntu users, press is press and this is good press. COMPUTERWORD had been around a long time and allot of old school IT guys read it. I for one am glad to see Ubuntu talked about between the pages of any trade publications…..

Well I’m off on Vacation no Cell phones, computers, or Internet. Trading it all in for fishing poles, beer, and  pine trees. See you in a week.
