Dell moves 40,000 Ubuntu PCs

November 30, 2007

Dell has shipped close to 40,000 systems pre-installed with the Ubuntu flavor of Linux, according to multiple sources. By most accounts, that’s a heck of a total for what remains more or less a fringe operating system. Read more here.

New Mexico Ubuntu LoCo Team Gets Official Status

November 29, 2007

New Mexico Team Gets Official Status, it’s true. Thanks to all the hard work from the members of the New Mexico Team we now are an official Ubuntu LoCo. What a meeting the Community Council had this morning, New Jersey, Georgia, New Mexico, and Michigan United States Teams all approved. I had to leave so I didn’t see if Denmark made it, I sure hope the Denmark team made it as well. Congratulation’s to every one, what a good day.

Finally Dual Screens In Gutsy

November 28, 2007

So I’ve posted before how disappointed I’ve been with how Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10) supports my video card. The card in question is an ATI X600 Dual head. I’m still disappointed as I had to jump though some major hoops to get it going, but finally I got it going. It took finding out that only xrandr is supported, I guess I should read the release notes more often. Then I had to make some changes to the xorg.conf file, makes sure I had ati-config installed (trust me that’s important). Then I had to write as script that changes the output to the screens the way I want it, and each time I reboot the script has to be ran because it reverts back to a single screen.

Now come on, this is just wrong Fiesty was so much easier to do, I hate taking a step backwards. Dual screens is a deal breaker for me, and I bet others as well.

I’d be more than happy to help anyone working on projects that make dealing with Dual head video cards less of a pain in Ubuntu, I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

How we use Linux

November 14, 2007

Now that my blog is working the proper way again on how it’s feeds get presented it’s time to get back to blogging.

Slowly but surely Linux is starting to make some good in roads at my work place. The reason is simple cost and flexibility. It’s just to expensive to run Microsoft and since I work for State government, and that means we have no money using a bloated (oh don’t get me wrong some distributions are headed down the bloat river) over priced OS just isn’t doing it for us. We even have a few people piloting OpenOffice here and there.

Here is what we do with Linux:

We have 3 kiosk running Ubuntu, the public uses these kiosk to look up Court records.

Our wiki is powered by a Debian server, recently we migrated websphere off and AS/400 and now run all our web applications on a Suse Enterprise server with Apache and Tomcat handling all that.

The developers are now developing on Ubuntu boxes running NetBeans. This is very significant basically once we get all our delphi code changed over to Java we will be able to push out Ubuntu as the desktop, our goal is to have all 350 desktops running Ubuntu by the start of 2009….I can’t even begin to tell you the cost savings, but it will be big.

Next is my little baby and that is Ubuntu server running Zimbra, this is still in the test phase but it’s a fantastic product and even if you bought the highest price support from Zimbra it’s still about 10% of the cost of running exchange, man to I love Zimbra.

So that’s what were doing, I’d love to here what your companies or organizations are doing with Linux.

Well, here it goes…do the headlines show up.

November 14, 2007

WordPress Tech support gave me a few more ideas so here we go….

Thanks to everyone that has helped me with this issue, I’d guess to say if I wasn’t dealing with Ubuntu people I would have never got all the help that I’ve gotten.

Ubuntu people rock!

Testing to see if my Headlines show up.

November 12, 2007

Testing to see if my Headlines show up. My last few post have not been showing up correctly when my blog gets aggregated.

I asked WordPress tech support but got a we didn’t change anything remark, you know I run a fairly large Help Desk and I refuse to let my people give that answer to any request, it’s just damn lazy.

So the testing and the looking over all my options continues. Funny thing is other (but not all) WordPress usersĀ  that have their blogs aggregated on Plant Ubuntu Users are seeing the same thing….

It’s WordPress

November 5, 2007

It’s WordPress cause other users of wordpress are getting the same thing, it’s posting the name of the blog and not the headlines when the blog is aggregated.

So what do I do now.
