My Linux Gaming Experience Just Went Up A Notch.

April 1, 2008

Last week  I took a vacation, the wife and I planned a  fun week in a nice resort, and my son  was ready to get away from us and spend some time with Grandma. Then pow the boy gets sick “real sick” I get sick the wife gets sick, really you should have come over it was a real snot fest. I could have got some work done, but no I was on vacation and I wanted to blow things up. Sure I could have fired up Quake Wars the demo alone kicks my butt or even one of the countless open source first person shooters like tremulous or World of Padman. Nope not for me I wanted to fly, blasting as I go firing missiles and zooming though asteroid fields. What I found to quench my lust for zero g dog fighting action was almost to good to be true. Beyond the Red Line, this is space combat at it finest.
What is Beyond the Red Line?

Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone total conversion for the award-winning Freespace 2 released by Volition and Interplay for the PC. It is based on the popular new tv-show Battlestar Galactica. No, not the one from the 70s.

Just look at how beautiful it is   Click here to see the full gallery. Oh to hookup my old joy stick and blast away and have real fun while doing it. The graphics, sound, and voice acting is even better than in Freespace 2. Right now they just have the Demo released with more campaigns on the way, which is good cause this game is what you always wished your Linux box would do.

Do yourself a big favor and go here to and follow the install guide for setting it up on a 32bit Linux box.

For the people behind this game thank you, and please, please keep the story going.

Also want to say thank you to the folks at Ubuntu Gamers Arena for showing me some fantastic Linux games.

Great Linux Games you might not know about.

March 6, 2008

Linux gaming is all around us you just have to know were to look. One of my favorite companies is Introversion they make great games at a great price. They really care about the games they make and all of them have native Linux versions. Uplink is tons of fun let lose that inner hacker.

If you like the movie war games then you have to get Defcon, you will have flash backs.

I also love Darwina if you like real time fast pace games then it’s for you. It also looks like a new title will be coming soon and I can’t wait Multiwinia. You can get all titles now for $39.00 US, that’s a damn good deal for top quality Linux games.

Yesterday I was turned on to a great puzzle game called Spandex Force check it out Thanks KarjaSoft for thinking of a Linux users.

You see Linux gaming is  growing and that makes this gamer happy.

He really was the father of all roll playing games.

Gutsy Gaming at it’s best

October 29, 2007

I’m not sure if this is the best use of my computer, forget that. I’m positive this is why I started messing with computers 30 years ago and that’s computer games. Linux is really starting to get on the gaming band wagon. With commercial titles being released for Linux almost as fast as the Windows titles (just take a look at Enemy Territory Quake Wars if you don’t believe me. Thanks ID software for thinking of us Linux users). Even the casual game market is getting in on the act if you like high quality games like that take a look at Runes of Avalon I spent allot of time on this one.

By far the most exiting gaming for Linux is all the top notch Open Source and Freeware games out there. The three I play again and again are.

Those Funny Funguloids

It one weird title but it sure is allot of fun, it’s a deb so download and install today.

Next on my list is Grid Wars 2

Trust me on this, it’s a time killer. The sound on this one is great.

The next one is near and dear to my heart, I spent so much time on this game well the coin op game Tempest when I was a youngster.

It’s Typhoon 2001

So go get them and kill some time, Linux gaming is here and don’t let anyone tell you other wise.

Ubuntu and Linux Polished Commercial Games

August 23, 2007

We have all heard it, Linux is great but where are the games? We all, also know that most good games cost a little money. I say most because I’ve played a few Linux Open Source and Freeware games that blow some commercial games out of the water, Grid Wars 2 and Neverball just to name a few. However, I stumbled upon one game the other day and after a few moments my credit card was in hand and I payed my $19.95. Look I’m going to admit something right here and now, I like casual games. You know what I’m talking about Bejeweled and it fantastic sequel Bejeweled 2 (play that one for hours on my Treo 650), Bookworm, all those PopCap Games that take way to much of your time. I found a company called anawiki.com and they have a few Linux titles one of the games is just great Runes of Avalon. It has all the things I like in a casual game flashy graphics (got to have those particle effects), play that is not to easy but not to hard, and bonus levels and power ups. This one even has a few mini games hidden with in it. Sure it’s not Defcon and I don’t get to frag people but it is fun and it’s very polished nice voice overs, vivid graphics, and fun game play. Sure you can get it in windows and even the Mac, but it sure is nice to see tux sitting right next to windows and mac logos with the words download beside it.

Grid Wars 2 - Works on Ubuntu not Windows

July 31, 2007

I’ve blogged about this game before, why cause it’s just so much fun. My wife, who loves a good blast fest as much as the next nerd lover, wanted it on her computer. No I haven’t  moved her over to Ubuntu,  she says I have to prove to her Gimp will work for her as good as Photo Shop CS. Well the real story is I could not get Grid Wars 2 to run on her Windows Box…..not sure why it would not run, but I was both surprised and happy.
