House overwhelmingly passes SAFE Act

December 6, 2007

Read the full story on engadget. Link to bill summary here. Link to who voted on it here.

When is this going to stop, has America has lost it’s collective mind. I’m getting damn sick and tired of the Nanny state.

“Look, kiddie porn and terrorism are bad. Obvious. But what better way for a government to push through controversial legislation quickly than to harness their emotive properties? After all, what self-respecting member of the US House of Representatives would vote against legislation called Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online, or SAFE? Only 2 it turns out (Rep. Paul Broun from Georgia and Rep. presidential candidate, Ron Paul) with 409 members voting yesterday in favor. The new bill requires everyone (that includes you and Starbucks) offering an open WiFi connection to the public to be on the lookout for “illegal images” and “obscene” cartoons and drawings which you must report. The reporting requirement extends to cover social networking sites, ISPs, and email providers. Failing to dutifully report what you’ve seen (or haven’t seen but are unwittingly complicit in) could leave your data seized and in debt from fines of up to $300,000″

Again, when will the rest of Washington D.C. read the constitution besides Ron Paul. I’m tired of my so called leaders using fear to control us. It’s fear and nothing more, they want to make us fear for our children’s safety (so they pass bill’s to control the internet), make us fear terrorist are around every corner (be sure and report suspicious activity on your friends and neighbors). I want my freedom back dammit.  We are turning into everything we are not, what other rights can we expect to see removed in the name of fear, no Habeas Corpus, held with out speedy trial, or held with out charges being filed. Oh wait we’ve all ready done that.

Does this belong on a technical blog, it sure as hell does, cause if this bill is passed and to turned into law, it makes us all informants do what the state dictates or suffer the oppression of the state.

A wild ride, How much can a web site take.

November 5, 2007

Ok I know this is a technical blog, but just a little politics. I thought it was real cool to be contacted by the guys at Terra Eclipse

These are the guys that developed Ron Paul’s website and what a great job they did. Today is Nov, 5th 2007 and thousands of Americans are donating today. I can just imagine what a hit their servers are going though. I’ve been checking off and on and it’s fast and the flash stuff is updating with out any hicups. Again real cool for Terra Eclipse to say thanks to a fan of their work.

New Mexico’s Gutsy Release Party a real good time

October 20, 2007

Our Ubuntu LoCo has been a labor of love, just 4 months ago there were just two of us, we now have 15 official members and more than that show up at our weekly IRC meetings. We’ve even been fairly successful in keeping an open dialog with our states LUG’S. It was sure great to see someone from the MVLUG (Mesilla Valley Linux Users Group) at the release party as I know that’s about a 4 hour drive from Las Cruces. A special thanks to the NMLUG (New Mexico Linux Users Group) for the encouraging emails I received from it’s members as I tried to organize the party.

The party was allot of fun and I can’t wait till our next face to face meeting.

Heres a picture of just some of the folks at the party

Ubuntu In The United States - A Plug for the teams

July 31, 2007

The Ubuntu US Teams Mentoring Project is working hard to get an approved Local Community (LoCo) Team in every state by the end of 2007. At the beginning of the year, there were only a couple state teams (see the map). Now, 7 months later, there is a LoCo in just about every state, minus a handful (see the updated map). See http://ubuntu-us.org.

Be sure and digg it if you have an account!
